Tomorrow the 21st of October TIDAL, the performance Nynke developped with Noord Nederlandse Dans, has its premiere in Groningen. A special project that from then on can be seen throughout the country.
Artistic director and choreographer Stephen Shropshire went into a collaboration with singer Nynke Laverman and composer Anne Parlevliet to discover how frustrated dreams can lead through excesses to purification and forgiveness. The result of that search is the triptych TIDAL.
With Laverman between the dancers on stage, movement en sound are going into a very concrete dialogue. She navigates with her voice between heavenly light and pitch-dark while dancers in one moment wave dreamily and then bite each other’s head off ferociously. Singer and dancers are connected to each other in a mutual dependency, within which the power relations seem to shift all the time.
Shropshire, Laverman and Parlevliet in Tidal challenge their artistic boundaries and stretch them. In doing that they are not afraid to be ugly, but in the end they leave the door ajar for everyone that likes to come home for the much-needed solace. Has the beast been tamed, then a hopeful song is heard.
